Another Glimmer of Hope

It always seems to be the second round of chemo that really gets me.

All my blood counts were down. I got a shot to stimulate the production of red blood cells on Monday and another shot to stimulate the production of white blood cells on Wednesday. If I ever find out who put the sting and burn in those shots, I am seriously going after that person.

Wednesday, Dr. Blakely examined the tumors. She said they didn’t seem as “nodular” to her. She is going to set up another round of CAT scans in the next couple of weeks to see how I’m doing on this chemo combination. One of the “funny” side effects of this chemo is my hands, feet and mouth/throat are extremely sensitive to cold. All the liquids I drink have to be room temperature. I’m wearing socks with some of my shoes in 100 plus degree weather. I’m walking around the office with gloves on. Think of the coldest thing you’ve ever held and how your hands felt and you’ve pretty much got the idea.

But I am able to go to work. Most of the days I can go a full day. The only days I have to cut short are the ones when I’ve had to take pain killers. (I tend to doze off at the computer or in the middle of activities.) I’ve even made it in to work for a couple of hours when my chemo was scheduled for late in the day and I was still hooked up to the chemo pump. (They have to give me some of the medicine over a 22 hour period. They hook me up to a pump that’s about the size of a 1980′s Gameboy and send me on my merry way.) Ahhh, the marvels of modern medicine.
