Although my house (barely) escaped the floodwaters, other areas of Abilene and surrounding towns did not get so lucky.
Saturday morning, we awoke to a rushing river behind our house. The drainage culvert for our housing development runs directly behind us. Several years ago, the City made some improvements to the drainage in our neighborhood. It’s a good thing. It was still raining heavily on Saturday morning, and I was already thinking about the possibility of moving things into our one upstairs room. Thankfully, the rain ended and the water behind our house receded. I feel sorry for those on the northside of town. They got the brunt of the flooding when Elm Creek came out of its banks.
This link pretty much tells the story, along with photos.
Hurricane Dean is on its way, expecting to make landfall in northern Mexico or southern Texas. Either way, we will probably get heavy rain from the outer bands by the weekend. Pretty scary.
