Fear of Flying

OK, call me backward, paranoid, silly or just a worry wart. I’m never going to be comfortable on a plane.

In just two days, we’ll be trusting strangers and mechanical devices with our lives…on three different planes. On Memorial Day Weekend. Yikes. I wouldn’t do this for just anyone, but I know if I don’t take this opportunity to see Roger Hodgson, I probably won’t ever see him perform live again. The things I do.

Seriously though, there have been strange reminders all around me that I’m about to fly the friendly (I hope) skies.

This week on my fave soap, “Days of Our Lives,” Bo and Steve are flying in a puddle jumper IN A TYPHOON…and to add to the mix, Steve has been brainwashed by the evil Dimera family and he’s trying to kill Bo, if not by the gun he’s wielding, then by purposely crashing both of them into the ocean. I really didn’t need to see this right now!

While watching the same episode, Randy mentioned that he wished Lucas would beat the crap out his meddling, conniving witch of a mom, Kate. Even putting on boxing gloves like in the movie “Airplane.” I was like, “please don’t talk about that movie right now!”

Last week, we were reading in the paper about United being one of the lowest rated airlines in customer satisfaction. This did not help my feelings any, since that’s one of the airlines we’re entrusting.

On an even more serious note, I just read a blurb in People magazine yesterday about Anthony Perkin’s son. His mom died in the 9/11 tragedy when her plane slammed into one of the towers.

How could any of us ever forget?

To my credit, I did fly almost exactly a year to the day from September 11, when we flew to San Diego (to see Roger, naturally!) in September of ’02. In fact, that was the last time we both flew. A lot has changed since then.

Even with all the new security measures in place, why do I feel so unsettled?  Did I mention there’s a 50% chance of thunderstorms both Thursday night and Friday?  (We’re flying out at ‘OMG it’s early’ on Friday morning.)  Does anyone have a couple of Xanax?

No, I would never, ever call you “backward, paranoid, silly or just a worry wart”. – and I dont hope anyone does  You are not the only one in this world who are not comfortable with flying – and many are even so terrified about it, that they have to get drunk to manage the trip :drunk:  I’m sure that’s not necessary for you, even though it’s a long planeride – just think of the wonderful show you are going to, and the meeting with a wonderful person – you lucky girl

Though I flew a lot when I was much younger, nowadays flying is not my favourite means of travel either. But if you would give me a ticket to Malta or to the Niagara Waterfalls I would just as easily get on board of a plane and forget all about my fears.
Kathy just think of all those planes in the air and what happens to them: not much! I guess there are more car accidents around the world than plane accidents. So I still think it is one of savest way’s of travelling. Just think of all the great things you will be seeing and hearing! Wishing both of you a good trip and lots of fun. :guitarist:
