It’s been exactly one month since I enrolled in Career Step. Let’s see. So far, I’ve learned (more or less!) Medical Word Building, Grammar and Style Essentials, Using Resources, Human Anatomy and Disease Processes, Medical Plurals, Pharmacology, Slang/Jargon, Foreign Terms, How to Look Up Words, Word Differentiation, and Formatting. I’m about to begin a large and very important unit in the course: Focus on Medical Specialties. There are actual transcribed reports from working M.T.s dictated by actual doctors, with notes on the how everything fits together. I plan on typing all of them, adding words to my word list in Li’l Red Notebook as I go along. This will help me become familiar with the terminology and report styles used in each specialty, so that when I start the transcription unit I’ll have a stronger foundation. I’m excited! This has been such an interesting ride so far. Yes, it’s challenging…but worthwhile. By the time I’m done with the course, I’ll have typed 1,000 reports; 500 from text and 500 from dictation.
It also helps that I enjoy medical programs such as “Dr. G Medical Examiner” and “Forensic Files.”
Time to give that new ergo keyboard a workout. Onward and upward, baby!
