SC rice plantation for sale in Colleton County near Beaufort
A century-old plantation set on a large 1,640-acre lot along South Carolina’s scenic ACE Basin is on the market.
Poco Sabo plantation, listed at $ 16.5 million, may be appealing to a buyer who enjoys history, hunting, conservation, or all three.
The property is located in the community of Green Pond in Colleton County, approximately 30 miles from downtown Beaufort.
“Poco Sabo is a place of recreation, modern land management and nature conservation,” the list boasts. “The plantation contains a wide variety of plant and animal habitats, well-regulated historic paddy fields, pecan orchards, cultivated agricultural fields and managed forests.”
The name of the plantation comes from the native Indian tribes of the region in the late 1680s.
Best known in its early days for rice production, probably with the use of slave labor similar to other nearby plantations, the tidal rice fields are among the most important historic structures of the property. There is also a historic family cemetery and a small tabby ruin.
The current owners purchased the property in 1994 and led the restoration efforts to update the 7,500 square foot main house and ancillary buildings. Today, other buildings on the grounds include a director’s house, guest cabins, equipment sheds, stables, kennels, a greenhouse and an exercise lodge, according to the list.
Recreational options include horseback riding, fishing, hunting, bird watching, and water sports.
